I am very close to finishing my Smartgun.
Its intended display place is directly next to my Pulse Rifle showcase. Here's an image:
There have been several iterations of a stand for it:
- The first stand I made was a receptacle in which the counterweight at the bottom could be placed. This receptacle was held to the sideboard magnetically. However, the Smartgun is not perfectly balanced at the centre and tended to tip forward or backward.
- Next I had the current stands made, which look nice but don't allow me to operate the charging handle or easily move the gun, which limits the ways to pick it up and put it down.
I was thinking: Maybe I could mount the Smartgun to a Steadicam arm (or a copy thereof) which would be mounted to the sideboard or the file cabinet behind it. This would allow it to be more or less held in place (maybe with the first stand I devised) but would simultaneously give the option to "swing out" the Smartgun when I feel like it.
Now, I am very knowledgeable about the Smartgun itself, but have no idea about the Steadicam arm. Would this even be possible? The potential problems I foresee:
- The arm would need to be attached to the Smartgun on the left side (the side facing away from the wall), and I don't want the arm to protrude over the sideboard when the gun is at rest. This might possibly be achieved if I don't go for a screen-accurate attachment to the Smartgun (meaning the arm would have to be attached to the Smartgun from below somehow).
- From what I have seen, the middle point of the arm will be the lowest point. Therefore, I might have to position the Smartgun higher for the arm below it, but I don‘t want it to sit too high. Is the arm balanced so that the „gun“ side is always at the same height as the „vest“ side? Or is this adjustable?
Could anyone who has a Steadicam (or a copy) tell me if (and how) this might be achieved? It would be immensely cool to have the Smartgun at rest at its current position, but be able to "swing it out" of its place and play with it.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Cheers!
Roman
